Setup help
When Install Structure stops on a Failed row, use this page. It covers the container engine, the bundled software Structure installs, and the local model download — without asking you to share secrets or client data.
Reading a Failed row
Each setup step is its own row. When something goes wrong, that row stays in place with a clear caption and one Try again link.
- The caption is the plain-language summary (for example, “The download stopped responding.”).
- Try again starts a fresh attempt for that step. Prefer this before restarting the whole install.
- Technical details holds short reason codes such as
stalledornetwork. Open it when you email us. It never needs passwords, tokens, or client files. - Still working. This can take a few minutes. means the row’s readout hasn’t changed for a bit. Large downloads often look quiet while bytes are still moving — wait, then use Try again only if it fails.
Do not paste secrets. Leave out API keys, gateway tokens, account passwords, and anything from a client deal. Redact home folder paths if they appear.
Container engine
Structure uses a container engine (Docker or Podman) to run the software it installs on your computer. If this row fails, the engine isn’t reachable yet — or isn’t installed.
What to try
- Install Docker Desktop or Podman Desktop on Windows, or Podman on Linux, if you don’t already have one.
- Start the engine and wait until it reports that it’s running (not still starting).
- Return to Structure and press Try again on the Container engine row.
- If the engine needs an admin prompt to finish installing, approve it, then try again.
Common causes
- The engine app is installed but not started.
- The engine is still finishing its first launch.
- This computer doesn’t have permission to install system packages (for example, no admin prompt available on a locked-down Linux box).
- Disk space ran out while the engine or its images were installing.
If Structure says it cannot reach the container engine, starting Docker or Podman and waiting for it to finish starting is the usual fix.
Bundled software
Current pilot installers already carry the deployment bundle inside the installer. On first run, Structure adopts that local bundle — it does not need to download it for a normal install. That work shows up as the deployment / dependencies row in setup.
Bundled adoption vs download
- Bundled (usual path). The package is already on disk with the installer. Setup unpacks and adopts it locally. A failure here is almost always disk space, a blocked write, or the install being interrupted — not a missing download.
- Optional download path. Some builds or updates may still fetch a package when one isn’t bundled. If the caption points at a download or network problem, treat it as that path: check the connection, then press Try again.
Not available yet vs Failed
- Not available yet means this build doesn’t include (or publish) that package. It isn’t a network failure — check for a Structure update, or wait for a release that includes it.
- Failed means adoption or an optional download didn’t finish (interrupted install, disk full, or a transfer that didn’t complete).
What to try
- Press Try again on that row after the computer is idle and Structure is still open.
- Free disk space if the computer is nearly full, then try again.
- If the install was interrupted, quit Structure, reopen it, and try again so adoption can finish from the local bundle.
- If the caption says a part isn’t included in this build, install a newer Structure build when one is available.
Local model download
The local model can be several gigabytes. Structure downloads it onto your computer so Sam can run without a cloud provider. Progress shows as a byte readout (for example, 0.4 GB of 2.6 GB).
What to expect
- Quiet stretches are normal. The still-working caption can appear while the download continues.
- If the row says The download stopped responding, press Try again once. Structure keeps the bytes it already has when it can, and starts a new attempt.
- If the readout drops back toward zero after a retry, that attempt started over — let it run, or try again when the network is steadier.
What to try
- Stay on a reliable network; avoid sleeping the computer mid-download.
- Keep enough free disk for the full model size plus a little headroom.
- Use Try again on the Model row after a stall or Failed state — you usually don’t need to wipe the install.
- After a Failed model row, the same caption and Try again should still be there if you quit and reopen Structure.
Supported platforms
Structure Personal comes to Windows first (Windows 10 22H2 or later) and 64-bit Linux, including ARM. Mac is to follow — we don’t publish Mac-only setup steps here until that build ships.
A lighter computer can still connect as a companion to a dedicated machine that already runs Structure. Hardware guidance lives on the requirements section of the home page.
